Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): A father-son duo were arrested in Jabalpur after police recovered gold jewelry worth lakhs from a river on Friday.
The duo, Premnath Mallah and his minor son, were involved in a series of thefts across the city. They were caught following a detailed investigation, which included examining over 1,000 CCTV footages.
The incident is of the Bhatauli Immersion Kund in Gauri Ghat, used by thieves to hide stolen items. The recovery came after a detailed investigation into increasing thefts across the city.
According to information, the police reviewed nearly 1,000 CCTV recordings and identified the suspects.
The accused confessed that after stealing the jewelry, they would dispose of it in the Bhatauli immersion kund at Gauri Ghat to avoid detection. The police, along with the SDERF team, launched a rescue operation and recovered several pieces of gold jewelry, including necklaces, bangles, and earrings, valued at lakhs.
The kund, originally built for idol immersions during festivals, had been misused by the father-son duo as a hiding place for their stolen goods. Police suspect that more stolen items might still be hidden in the river and are continuing to question the duo to uncover further crimes.
Premnath Mallah, a notorious thief living in Patel Nagar, was arrested. During questioning, he revealed that he, along with his minor son and another accomplice, carried out thefts in different areas of the city.
The accused confessed that after stealing gold jewelry, they would dump it in the river, believing the items were artificial or to avoid being caught by the police.
This breakthrough is expected to solve multiple theft cases as the police continue to interrogate the accused.
The recovered jewelry has been estimated to be worth several lakhs, and the investigation is ongoing.
