The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) started a tax collection drive on December 1. The civic body has intensified its efforts to recover pending property tax dues, which were affected by the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year and later due to the Maharashtra Assembly polls.
According to the PMC’s 2024-25 budget, the property tax department was tasked with collecting ₹2,728 crore in property taxes. However, as of the end of November, only ₹1,775 crore had been collected. With just a few months left until the fiscal year ends on March 31, 2025, the PMC faces the daunting task of recovering nearly ₹950 crore of pending dues.
Huge tax collected in just 5 days
In a major recovery initiative, the Taxation and Tax Collection Department of PMC achieved significant success by collecting ₹14.14 crore in just five days, from 2nd December 2024 to 6th December 2024.
To meet the revenue targets for the financial year 2024-25, PMC constituted specialized recovery teams, which conducted extensive recovery actions across 15 regional offices. During the drive, the recovery teams visited 165 properties, and a total of ₹14,14,26,212 was recovered.
Properties associated with Sinhagad Technical Institute in Kondhwa B., Ambegaon B., and Erandwane faced recovery actions. Specifically, a property at Erandwane with outstanding dues of ₹47.43 crore was confiscated as of December 6, 2024, and 26 properties have been seized due to unpaid taxes.
The PMC has jurisdiction over approximately 1.4 lakh income holders. Out of these, 8,74,546 income holders have already paid their taxes, contributing a total of ₹1,804 crore to the municipal treasury.
Madhav Jagtap, Deputy Commissioner of the Taxation and Tax Collection, PMC, said, “Recovery efforts are ongoing to collect dues from remaining defaulters, with stern action planned against those failing to comply. This has helped to resources and is expected to continue yielding positive results.”
