Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his three-day “historic and productive” visit to France, presented carefully curated gifts highlighting India’s indigenous craftsmanship to French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron. His choice of presents reflected India’s deep-rooted artistic traditions and the skills of its artisans.
Exquisite Dokra artwork for president Macron
PM Modi gifted a Dokra artwork to President Macron, a stunning representation of India’s rich tribal artistry. Originating from Chhattisgarh, Dokra art is a revered metal-casting tradition that dates back over 4,000 years. This ancient technique, known as the lost wax method, involves meticulous craftsmanship and an intricate casting process. The artwork gifted to President Macron depicts traditional musicians in dynamic poses, celebrating the cultural significance of music in Indian tribal traditions.
It is primarily made form copper and brass and this particular piece is further adorned with lapis lazuli and coral, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Dokra artisans, often belonging to tribal communities, spend weeks or even months on a single piece, ensuring each artwork is unique. The skill and dedication involved in this labour-intensive craft have kept this traditional art form alive through generations. More than just decoration, Dokra pieces carry symbolic and cultural significance, showcasing India’s deep artistic heritage.
A silver hand-engraved mirror for the first lady
For First Lady Brigitte Macron, PM Modi presented an exquisite silver hand-engraved table mirror from Rajasthan. This beautifully crafted piece features intricate floral and peacock motifs, symbolising grace, nature, and beauty.
The mirror’s fine detailing is a testament to Rajasthan’s rich metalwork traditions. Carefully engraved and polished to a brilliant shine, the piece reflects the mastery of skilled artisans who continue to preserve traditional techniques. Serving as both a functional and decorative heirloom, the silver mirror embodies elegance and artistic brilliance.
By selecting these handcrafted gifts, PM Modi emphasised India’s commitment to preserving its traditional crafts and promoting indigenous artisans. The choice of Dokra art from Chhattisgarh and silver metalwork from Rajasthan showcases the depth of India’s cultural and artistic diversity. These thoughtful gifts serve as symbols of India’s rich heritage and craftsmanship, strengthening cultural ties between India and France.
