Meeting of PM Modi and Mohammad Yunus: There was a bilateral discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Government’s Interim Advisor Mohammad Yunus at the BIMSTEC summit held in Thailand. During this discussion, Prime Minister Modi expressed concern about the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh. It has also hoped that the interim government of Bangladesh will handle the appropriate responsibility in this matter.
Giving information about this, the Central Government Foreign Secretary Vikram Egypt said that Prime Minister Modi has raised the issue of plight of minorities including Hindus in Bangladesh before Younus. Expressing concern, Prime Minister Modi has expressed hope that the Bangladesh government will fulfill its responsibility in this matter in a proper manner.
He said that Prime Minister Modi has displayed India’s commitment to support a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and more inclusive Bangladesh. He also expressed his desire to establish more positive and creative relations with Bangladesh.
Prime Minister refrained from answering Hasina’s question
Misri said that Yunus raised the issue of Sheikh Hasina during this conversation. But Prime Minister Modi postponed it saying that it would not be appropriate to say anything on it. Modi said that one should stay away from such statements. This can unnecessarily spoil bilateral relations.
Yunus counted India’s weaknesses
Yunus came into controversy by mentioning India’s weaknesses during a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Yunus invited China to invest in Bangladesh and said that there are immense opportunities for business in Bangladesh. Dhaka is the only patron of the sea in this region. While the northeastern states of India are surrounded by huge terrain. There is no sea route near it. We should invest there because Bangladesh is the only country that has a sea route.
Attack after Hasina’s coup
Last year, Sheikh Hasina’s coup in Bangladesh increased attacks on minorities including Hindus. Countries around the world including India expressed concern over the matter and condemned the interim government of Bangladesh.
