Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now left for Sri Lanka after attending the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok. The Prime Minister attended the sixth BIMSTEC summit in Thailand, where he was warmly welcomed. During this time several important agreements were also signed between India and Thailand. Along with this, bilateral talks were also held between India and Bangladesh. Bangladeshi acting Mohammad Yunus met Prime Minister Modi. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi suggested that Bangladesh avoid unnecessary rhetoric, which could cause tension in relations between the two countries.

Now Prime Minister Modi has left for Sri Lanka, where he will hold bilateral talks with President Anura Kumar Disanayake. After the Modi-Disanayak talks, several other bilateral agreements are also expected to be signed between the two sides, including Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring. In a press conference last week, Foreign Secretary Vikram Egypt said that an MoU is expected to be signed on the Defense Cooperation and this will be the first time that it will be signed.

India-Sri Lanka will be strengthened further

It is expected that Prime Minister Modi’s visit will further strengthen India-Sri Lanka relations. If a memorandum of agreement on defense cooperation is signed, it will be a major success in India-Sri Lanka defense relations. The agreement will surpass the bitter chapter related to the return of the Indian Peace Army (IPKF) from Sri Lanka about 35 years ago. Details of the proposed defense agreement are not available immediately, but it is expected that it will promote bilateral defense relations in the backdrop of China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean region.

There may be talks at Hambantota port

The incident of laying the Chinese missile and satellite tracking ship ‘Yuan Wang’ at Hambantota port in August 2022 has led to a diplomatic dispute between India and Sri Lanka. In August 2023, another Chinese warship will arrive at Colombo port. On the overall relationships, Misri said, “Sri Lanka is an integral part of our ‘neighbor’ policy and our relationship based on mutual trust and goodwill has lived up to the test of time.” He said that Modi’s travel would be focused on promoting investment, strengthening contact and promoting cooperation in various other fields.
