Both leaders meet at BIMSTEC summit

It is worth noting that Mohammad Yunus, Executive Advisor to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, requested India to meet Prime Minister Modi. He held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi in the capital Bangkok. This meeting is considered an important diplomatic move amidst the current stressful phase in the Indo-Bangladesh relations. Earlier, the two leaders were seen together at a dinner organized by Thai Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinavatra.

The meeting between the two leaders took place at a time when Mohammad Yunus is engulfed in controversies over talks with President Xi Jinping during his visit to China. Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, who visited China, said on Chinese soil that Dhaka is the only sea protector in the region. Inviting China to invest in its country, Younus counted India’s borders and wooed China saying that there are immense business opportunities in Bangladesh.

What was the conversation between Prime Minister Modi and Mohammad Yunus?

Referring to the northeastern states of India, Muhammad Yunus said that the northeastern states of India are called seven sisters. They are underground countries, underground areas of India. They have no way to reach the sea. Bangladesh is the only sea patron in this entire region.

However, no official details have been released by any country about bilateral talks between Prime Minister Modi and Mohammad Yunus yet. There has been an increase in incidents of violence in Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina was removed from power in August 2024. This has affected bilateral relations.

India has repeatedly expressed concern about attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. It is noteworthy that this is the first meeting between the two leaders after the government of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August last year. Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since the coup in Bangladesh.
