Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Nigeria on Sunday as part of his three-nation tour. PM Modi was honored with ‘The Grand Commander of the Order of Niger’ award in Nigeria. It is Nigeria’s second highest national award. Accepting the award from Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, PM Modi said that it is an honor not only for him but for 140 crore Indians.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister of India to reach Nigeria after one year. He held a bilateral meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During this, PM Modi said that India gives special priority to its strategic partnership with Nigeria and will work towards enhancing relations in many areas including defence, energy and trade. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Modi suggested Nigeria to benefit from India’s experiences in agriculture, transport, affordable medicines, alternative energy and digital transformation. President Tinubu appreciated India’s proposed development cooperation partnership and its significant impact in building local capacity, skills and commercial expertise.

PM Modi said that Nigeria is playing a huge and positive role in the African continent and cooperation with Africa is a priority issue for India. In the meeting with President Tinubu, PM Modi identified terrorism, separatism, piracy and drug trafficking as major challenges and said the two countries will continue to work together on these issues.
Regarding the importance of PM Modi’s visit to West Africa, Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria G. Balasubram.am said, Nigeria is one of the most populous countries in Africa and its economy is also an important partner for India. Over 200 Indian comp.es have invested an estimated $27 billion in Nigeria and are the second largest employment generator in the country after the Nigerian government.
Earlier in October 2007, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, during his visit to African countries, had given the status of ‘strategic partnership’ to India-Nigeria relations. Nigeria has been a close partner of India for more than six decades.
PM Modi reached Nigeria on Sunday as part of a five-day visit to three countries. From Abuja he will reach Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to attend the G-20 summit on November 18-19. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Guyana in the last leg of the tour.
