Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached the residence of late former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh on Friday morning amid light showers in the national capital. Both leaders paid their last respects to the departed soul and offered condolences to his family.
BJP president and Union Minister JP Nadda also paid his final respects to the former PM. Visuals from the former PM’s residence have surfaced online in which PM Modi, HM Shah and Union Minister JP Nadda can be seen laying floral wreaths on Dr Manmohan Singh’s mortal remains.
According to reports, the last rites of the former PM will be held on Saturday as the family awaits his daughter’s arrival from abroad.
Congress leader KC Venugopal has indicated that the timing of the last rites will be announced today. Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit explained that the final schedule would be determined after Dr Singh’s daughter arrives in the evening.
The Government of India has canceled all of today’s scheduled programs and declared a seven-day national mourning period following Dr Singh’s passing.
The mortal remains of the former PM will be placed at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi for public homage. According to Congress party sources, the ‘last darshan’ is scheduled for Saturday morning between 8:00 and 10:00. Party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, will pay their respects at the AICC office before the final rites are performed.
Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, passed away at 9:51 PM yesterday at AIIMS hospital in Delhi. The 92-year-old leader had been receiving treatment for age-related conditions at his Delhi residence when he suddenly lost consciousness on Thursday evening. He was rushed to AIIMS around 8 PM, where despite the medical team’s efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at 9:51 PM.
