PM Modi and Mohammad Yunus on the same platform: Dinner picture took attention before Bimstec Summit

Prior to the Bimstec Summit, the official dinner organized by Thailand’s Prime Minister Petagatarn Shinavatra has created a stir at the international level. In a picture of this dinner, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bangladesh’s interim government chief Mohammad Yunus and Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Oli appeared together. This is the first time PM Modi and Yunus have appeared on a platform after the fall of Hasina government in Bangladesh.

What is the strategic importance of this picture?

The picture describes the complexity of relations with India’s neighboring countries, not just a dinner. The current political situation of both Bangladesh and Nepal countries has been a matter of concern for India. In such a situation, the presence of Modi and Yunus in the same frame is being seen as a political sign. However, it is not clear whether there was any kind of conversation between the two leaders.

Did there be any dialogue during dinner?

According to reports, Modi and Yunus were seen sitting nearby at the dinner held at Hotel ‘Shangri-La’ on the banks of the Chao Fraya River. In the pictures shared by Younus’s office, the two leaders definitely appeared sitting together, but the two were not eyeing each other. Due to this, there is speculation that there was no direct talk.

Bangladesh’s efforts and India’s silence

It was expected by Bangladesh that there should be bilateral talks between PM Modi and Younus in Bangkok. However, no official response has been given by the Government of India. The position of post-Hasina government in Bangladesh, the attack on minorities and the statements made by Yunus in support of China, remains tension in the Indo-Bangladesh relations.

There can be scope for talk in BIMSTEC

On Friday, BIMSTEC will be handed over to Bangladesh. During this time, leaders of both countries can consider mutual issues. Bangladesh representative Khalilur Rahman has also indicated that there is possibilities of meeting between PM Modi and Younis. There was no confirmation on this from India, but the letter written by PM Modi to Younus last week is being considered a positive sign.

Modi’s letter: initiative to normalize relationships?

On the National Day of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Modi wrote a letter to Mohammad Yunus, in which he emphasized on strengthening the shared history and mutual sensitivity of India-Bangladesh. It was also mentioned in the letter that the two countries are committed to working together in the direction of peace, stability and prosperity.

S. Jaishankar’s statement: indirect message?

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, in his address at the BIMSTEC conference, discussed the connectivity network of Northeast India and underlined India’s role in the Bay region of Bengal. This statement is being seen in the context of Mohammad Yunus’s statement in which he described Bangladesh in front of China as the ‘patron’ of the Ocean.

India’s concern: extremism and attack on minorities

India is particularly cautious about recent developments in Bangladesh. India has expressed serious concern over the acquittal of fundamentalists and increasing attacks on minorities since the fall of the Hasina government. The Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly raised these issues and has expressed a stable and inclusive system from Bangladesh.
