Piyush Goyal reviews infrastructure projects in North Mumbai, announces MCRP 2 work to begin within 45 days | X
Mumbai: A year after the BMC awarded the contracts for the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) 2, spanning from Versova to Dahisar, Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, assured that work on this ambitious infrastructure project would begin within the next 45 days.
Goyal made this announcement following a review of several infrastructure developments in the North Mumbai constituency on Saturday. His visit comes ahead of the upcoming BMC elections.
Goyal held a joint meeting with representatives of several agencies like Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, Slum Rehabilitation Authority, alongside the BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, at the civic headquarters on Saturday evening.
This meeting was part of his review of the infrastructure projects in the North Mumbai constituency, particularly focusing on the MCRP 2. The 20 km road project, estimated at Rs 16,621 crore, will provide a vital connection between Versova and Dahisar, easing traffic congestion in the region.
This new infrastructure is set to reduce the load on the Dahisar check naka by 30-35%. While the work order for the project was issued last year, progress has been delayed due to pending mandatory permissions.
“The project has received the required clearances, including the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) permission. The No Objection Certificate required from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) will be received soon, after which it will be submitted to the High Court. The BMC has assured in the review meeting that work on the much-awaited project will start in the next 45 days,” said Goyal.
Meanwhile, he has also instructed the civic body to invite a fresh tender for the Desalination plant, located in Manori at Malad West. The proposed plant is designed with an initial capacity of 200 million litres of water per day(MLD), with potential future expansion to 400 (MLD).
Project worth Rs. 60,000 crores…
Goyal, who also represents the North Mumbai constituency, said that five MLAs from Mahayuti were elected with the highest vote count in the state assembly elections held in November. He also stated that he has set a target to elect 40 corporators from Mahayuti in his constituency in the upcoming BMC elections and expressed hope that the BMC elections will be held soon.
To make North Mumbai constituency as Excellent Mumbai several other projects worth Rs. 60,000 crores have been undertaken in these areas. The project includes Lokhandwala DP Road, Malad Development Project, development of playgrounds, cleanliness campaigns, identification and development of tourist spots, a campaign to train 100 self-help groups, special workshops for the fishing community, construction of cultural centers, parking arrangements in Borivali (East), measures to improve healthcare services, widening and rehabilitation of the Poisar River.
No waste in the Gorai dump yard…
In 2009, the Gorai dump yard was closed following a 2006 Bombay high court order. The 19.6 hectare site has been transformed into a garden spread, where 2,200 tonnes of garbage was dumped every day. Goyal has suggested to the BMC to develop a tourism spot at this location.
He emphasised that no one wants a dumping ground in their backyard, urging the civic body to identify locations in each ward to establish refuse transfer centres. These centres would process waste specific to the respective areas, ensuring a more localised and efficient waste management system.
Mith Chowky to be operational soon..
The BMC has successfully launched all the girders on the southern arm of the Mith Chowky flyover in Malad (West). This milestone was particularly challenging due to the presence of the Metro 2A line running directly above the flyover. Despite these complexities, the project has made progress, with the flyover to be fully operational by January 14, 2025.
