How are the prices of petrol and diesel fixed?
Petrol and diesel prices in India are fixed every day and play many factors in it. Mainly three government oil companies – Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) – fix fuel rates. These companies amend prices keeping in mind the following factors:
- International crude oil prices: Globally, oil prices fluctuations have a direct impact on petrol and diesel prices in India.
- Rupee-Dollar Exchange Rate: If the rupee is weak against the dollar, oil imports are expensive and this can increase prices.
- Tax and Duty: Excise duty and VAT imposed by the central and state governments also affect the price of fuel.
- Transportation and Storage Cost: The cost of taking fuel from one place to another is also included in prices.
In March 2024, the last time petrol and diesel prices were cut by ₹ 2 per liter. Since then, prices have remained largely stable, which is a matter of relief for the general public.
