When the beginning of every day looks towards the petrol pump, then there is only one question in people’s minds – Will there be some relief today? But on 24 March 2025, the expectations of millions of people have been destroyed. Government oil companies have not once again made any changes in the prices of petrol and diesel. The price has remained the same for a year continuously, due to which the common people are neither relaxed nor relief in the pocket.
Stir in international market, but silence in India
Crude oil prices are seen fluctuating worldwide. Somewhere there is a slight rise, but it did not show any significant impact in India. Government oil companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have not changed the rates on 24 March 2025. In such a situation, the question arises that international changes have now become irrelevant in India?
No change after March 2024 – consumers disappointed
In March 2024, the government last cut petrol and diesel prices by ₹ 2 per liter. It was then expected that it would be the beginning of relief. But since then there has been no increase, nor any other cut. That is, the prices remained stable, and the expectations of the middle class also stayed there.
Prices of petrol and diesel today in major cities of the country (rupee per liter)
City | Petrol (₹/liter) | Diesel (₹/liter) |
---|---|---|
Delhi | 94.72 | 87.62 |
Mumbai | 103.44 | 89.97 |
Kolkata | 103.94 | 90.76 |
Chennai | 100.85 | 92.44 |
Bengaluru | 102.86 | 88.94 |
Lucknow | 94.65 | 87.76 |
Noida | 94.87 | 88.01 |
Gurugram | 95.19 | 88.05 |
Chandigarh | 94.24 | 82.40 |
Patna | 105.18 | 92.04 |
Looking at these figures, it is clear that the difference of prices in big cities still remains. Petrol is the most expensive in Patna, the capital of Bihar, while diesel is cheapest in Chandigarh.
Can you get further relief? Opinion of experts
Now the question is whether petrol and diesel will be cheap in the coming days or not? Experts say that if crude oil prices fall in the international market and the rupee’s position is stronger against the dollar, then the government can cut prices. But at the moment there is no indication that there will be a big change in prices soon.
How are the prices of petrol and diesel fixed?
Fuel prices in India are updated at 6 am every morning. These rates decide government companies like Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum. Their accounts are quite complicated-it involves:
- Crude oil prices in international market
- Dollar-Rupaya Exchange Rate
- Tax imposed by central and state governments
- Transportation and refining cost
By adding all these things, different rates are made in each city, so the rates are more visible in Mumbai and Patna, while less in cities like Chandigarh and Delhi.
