The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday said 98.12 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banking system so far, while Rs 6,691 crore of such notes are still with the public. RBI has announced to withdraw Rs 2000 denomination bank notes from circulation on May 19, 2023. Then the process of withdrawing these notes was going on.

The total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation at the close of business on December 31, 2024, was Rs 6,691 crore, the RBI said in a statement. On May 19, 2023, the day of RBI’s decision, this value was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. Reserve Bank said- In this way, till May 19, 2023, a total of 98.12 percent of the Rs 2000 notes in circulation have been returned.

 

The facility to deposit or exchange these notes was available in all bank branches till 7 October 2023. However, this facility is still available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank. Apart from this, common people can send Rs 2,000 notes by post from any post office in the country to any issue office of RBI to deposit in their bank account.

Despite withdrawing money from currency. Rs 2,000 notes will remain legal tender. RBI had demonetized the then rupee in November 2016. 1,000 and Rs. 500 bank notes after withdrawing Rs. 2,000 note was brought.
