Mumbai: The BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department imposed a penalty of ₹1000 on the BEST ( Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking ) Depot Supervisor.

The action comes after a X user “MNCDF”, a Citizen Welfare Forum, pointed out that the staff of BEST bus Depot in Goregaon West, at Goregaon Railway Station, has been regularly burning waste inside the depot, despite warning them not to engage in such ‘air-polluting activities’.

The user also urged the civic body to initiate action and a permanent solution to the waste burning problem at Goregaon Bus Depot.

The user also posted a video of the same, showing waste burning behind a tree.

Responding to which the Official X Handle of Solid Waste Management Department of the BMC said, “A penalty of ₹1000 has been imposed on the BEST Depot Supervisor for the incident involving burning of dry leaves by a sweeper. A strict warning has also been issued that any recurrence will invite stringent action.”

The BMC also thanked the citizen forum for bringing the issue to their notice.

Notably, the BMC increased the fine for open burning of waste from ₹100 to ₹1,000, effective April 1, 2025.

Besides, a team has been formed at the ward level to prevent such open burning of waste. The team includes a junior supervisor from the Solid Waste Management department, a nuisance detector (ND staff), and a mukadam (supervisor).
