Security lapses continued to embarrass the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after yet another pitch invasion unfolded after the Afghanistan vs England Champions Trophy Match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday, February 26. The incident occurred moments after Afghanistan’s thrilling eight-run win over England.

A fan breached security and ran onto the field to join the jubilant Afghan players. The intruder attempted to hug the players during their celebrations but was swiftly tackled and dragged away by security personnel. The photo of the incident had gone viral on social media.

This latest breach adds to the growing concerns over the security arrangements by the PCB, with the tournament already witnessing such incident. This ICC event is of major significance for Pakistan as it is hosting for the first time in 29 years.

Earlier in the tournament, during the Bangladesh vs New Zealand clash, a man stormed onto the field and tried to grab Rachin Ravindra from behind. The Pakistan Cricket Board administration took severe steps against the person, arresting and banning him from all cricketing venues in the country.

The PCB has expressed its dedication to working closely with security agencies to enhance and improve current security measures. However, the latest episode has now raised serious questions over Pakistan’s ability to host major events.

Can Afghanistan enter semi-finals?

After defeating England, Afghanistan are in the race for the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinals. They will face Australia for their third league match which will take place on February 28 at Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore.

If Afghanistan wins the match and England beats South Africa, then they stand to make it to the final four. However, If the Proteas beat England the final place will go to them as they will have more points.
