Pavel Durov: Telegram CEO’s big allegation, ‘WhatsApp stole 80% of our features’

News India Live, Digital Desk: Telegram founder Pavel Durov hit the rival messaging app WhatsApp directly. In a post on X, Durov claimed that most of the top features of WhatsApp were taken from Telegram, and that too ‘years later’.

This comment comes at a time when Telegram continues to grow at its fast pace. Last year, it earned a profit of 50 million users pairs and $ 547 million in 2024.

“Telegram launched. WhatsApp copied. Years later.”

In a bold post, Durov wrote, “A few WhatsApp users realize that they are using a copycat. More than 80% of its features were copied from telegram – years later.” He attached a set of infographics, showing how long it took for WhatsApp to repeat the Telegram’s major feature. Some comparisons were eye -opening.

  • Channel launched on Telegram in 2015, came on WhatsApp after 8 years
  • Message editing facility came on Telegram in 2016, WhatsApp presented after 7 years
  • The media disappearing? In 2013, Telegram did this. WhatsApp did the same after 8 years

The list also includes facilities like multi-device support, pole, stickers and even voice-to-text, which Telegram claims that they have started it years ago. In Durov’s post, the rollouts of these tools on WhatsApp have been described as late, half-incomplete and highly promoted.

Telegram emergence in creator and crypto space

Telegram has developed from a messaging app and has become a platform for creators, businesses and crypto projects. It supports Ton Network-like blockchain tools, provides in-app wallets, bots and has its own decentralized identity system. These features are helping Telegram make their place beyond traditional messaging.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp with more than 2 billion active users remains a global veteran, especially in markets such as India and Brazil. But Telegram’s rapid growing popularity and direct attacks on WhatsApp show that rivalry between the two is still not over.
