Meaning of Pashupatinath
“Pashupatinath” is a very important name in many names of Lord Shiva. In the scriptures, the word “animal” is not only used for animals, but for all those organisms which are in ignorance, fascination and bondage. At the same time, “husband” means protector and owner. Thus Lord Shiva is considered the lord and liberator of all those beings who are entangled in the bondage of the world.
Muni Nikumbh’s penance and Pashupati Vidya
According to a legend, Muni Nikumbh was doing harsh penance in the Himalayas. Lord Shiva was pleased with his devotion and wanted to provide him “Pashupati Vidya”, which was the medium of salvation. King Indra of heaven, Indra expressed his desire to know this knowledge and tried to disturb the penance of the sage. Muni Nikumbh became angry and started cursing Indra. Fearful Indra prayed for protection from Lord Shiva. Shiva pacified the sage and used this discipline himself took the form of “Pashupatinath” for the welfare of all living beings.
Story of demonic destruction
Another story told that there was a terror of demons in Kathmandu region at one time. He used to suffer innocent creatures. The gods sought help from Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva destroyed those demons with his divine power and protected all beings. Pleased with this, the gods gave him the title of “Pashupatinath”. Today the famous Pashupatinath Temple is located at this place.
Context related to Mahabharata
According to the Mahabharata, Shiva was disguised with worldly fascination and took the form of a deer in the Himalayas and went to a cave. Goddess Parvati and other gods found her and when they met, they were in animal form. The gods prayed that they return to their true form and become the protector of all beings. Then Lord Shiva appeared in the form of “Pashupatinath” and admitted that he is the master of all living beings.

The “Pashupatinath Temple” located in Kathmandu, Nepal is counted among the most famous temples of Lord Shiva. This temple is very ancient and historical.
