At least six to eight workers are expected to be trapped by a part of the section under construction under the construction of the Srisailam tunnel canal in Nagarakurranul district of Telangana. Confirming the incident, the police said that the team of the construction company has gone inside the tunnel to take stock of the situation and is verifying.

How did the incident happen?

According to a senior police officer, the accident occurred when some workers went inside 12–13 km of the tunnel in connection with work and suddenly a part of the roof fell. This increased the chances of the workers present there getting stuck there.

Government response and relief work

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy

  • The District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police and other officers were instructed to immediately reach the spot and speed up relief work.
  • State Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and Government Advisor for Irrigation Affairs Adityanath Das have also been sent to the spot.

Expressing concern over the incident, Union Coal Minister Kishan Reddy has also asked the officials to take out the trapped workers as soon as possible and arrange for proper treatment of the injured.

The status of the trapped workers so far is not clear. Relief and rescue teams have reached the spot and are trying to control the situation. The administration’s priority is to evacuate the workers safely and provide quick treatment to the injured.
