The Panvel-Karjat Suburban Corridor project is nearing completion, with 70% of the work already done. If all goes as planned, the project is expected to be finished by the end of this year, December 2025.

According to an official, earthwork and the construction of major and minor bridges are actively progressing, with contracts awarded in two lots. To date, 47 bridges and one Foot Over Bridge (FOB) have been completed, while work is ongoing on 16 additional bridges, including flyovers.

“Station building contracts for Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk, and Karjat have been awarded. Notably, at Panvel Station, the construction of the station building, staff quarters, Overhead Equipment (OHE) depot, and water tanks is underway. The FOB at the Karjat end has been completed” he said.

Apart from that Pune Expressway Rail Under Bridge (RUB) has seen all four Open Web Girders (OWG) launched, with painting finalized. At the Panvel Rail Flyover, substructure work is in progress, with the deck slab completed for 81 spans. Six out of eight composite girders have been erected, and OWG fabrication is ongoing at multiple locations, with one girder already delivered to the Panvel site.

According to Mumbai Rail Vikas corporation, Karjat Rail Flyover has achieved the launching of 146 out of 164 Prestressed Concrete (PSC) girders, with deck slab work completed for 77 spans. Additionally, 18 out of 30 composite girders have been erected. For the Mohape Road Over Bridge (ROB), both composite girder erection and deck slab works are complete, with approach ramp construction and Reinforced Earth (RE) wall work in progress.

At the Kirawali ROB, girders have been delivered to the site, with erection scheduled for February 2025. Track linking and associated Permanent Way (P-Way) works are advancing on the Panvel-Karjat corridor. In the Panvel Yard, a 180-meter track slewing has been executed to facilitate platform extension. Track linking commenced at Mohape Yard on November 22, 2024, with 4 kilometers laid and ballast formation completed over 13 kilometers.

Once completed, the Panvel-Karjat Suburban Railway Corridor will significantly reduce travel time, provide seamless connectivity, and cater to the increasing commuter demand in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). By serving as a crucial link between Panvel and Karjat, the corridor will support Mumbai’s ever-expanding suburban railway network and promote regional economic growth, said an official.
