Pakistan UNSC: Pakistan has begun its tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which has the primary responsibility for establishing and maintaining peace at the international level. Became a member of UNSC for the eighth time
The 15-member UNSC Round Table Meeting has elected Pakistan for the 2025-26 term. This is the eighth time that Pakistan has achieved this important position. Earlier, Pakistan was a temporary member of UNSC in 2012-13, 2003-04, 1993-94, 1983-84, 1976-77, 1968-69 and 1952-53.
Pakistan was appointed to this post with overwhelming votes in June-2024. Pakistan got 183 votes out of 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly. Speaking about this momentous occasion, Pakistan’s Ambassador said, ‘We are at a time when the world is facing challenges including geopolitical crisis, unrest, competition among major economies, war situations in regions like Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Is facing. Pakistan, the fifth largest country in terms of population, will try to resolve these disputes and challenges. It will also play an active and constructive role in solving problems like terrorism.
Pakistan instead of Japan
Pakistan has replaced Japan in the meeting of Asian countries. Japan’s term expires on December 31, 2024. Along with Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama and Somalia were also elected as non-permanent members in the General Assembly elections in June, 2024. The five permanent members of this council include America, Russia, China, Britain and France.
