Donald Trump’s decision: Donald Trump has taken power in America but one of his decisions has troubled Pakistan. As soon as Donald Trump became President, he canceled the refugee program of Biden’s tenure. Under this program, Afghan refugees trapped in Pakistan were to be resettled in America. The Biden administration had told Pakistan that America would soon give shelter to all the refugees, but this could not happen while they were in power. All these refugees had fled from Afghanistan to Pakistan when the Taliban overthrew power there and announced their government.
Most of the refugees leaving Afghanistan were those who had previously worked for the US military. At that time, America had asked the Pakistani government regarding these refugees to give them a place in their country for some time. Then America will settle it somewhere. Pakistan expected that this process would be completed within a few months but it did not happen.
Pakistan kept waiting for America to settle these 25 thousand Afghan refugees, whereas Donald Trump changed everything as soon as he came to power. Meanwhile, if Pakistan reacts more strongly in this matter, then relations between the two countries may start getting sour as soon as Trump’s tenure begins.
Biden government has already approved 1600 Afghan refugees
A US government official said on Monday that there are about 1,600 Afghan refugees for whom the US has given the green signal for resettlement. These also include family members of many Afghans currently serving in the US military.
However, after this decision of Trump, he had to cancel his flight ticket. These people are scared because their family members have worked for the US-backed Afghan government. Meanwhile, these people may face great danger under Taliban rule.
Till now, there has been no official response from the Pakistani government in this matter and America has also not said anything, but according to sources, Pakistan’s uneasiness has increased a lot due to this decision of Trump. A Pakistani official said, ‘We knew that this could happen if Donald Trump won the election, but the way the US government did it shocked us.’
Pakistan has been urging America to speed up the process
A day before the swearing-in of Donald Trump, a meeting was held in the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan. In which Afghan refugees were discussed. Pakistan was continuously requesting that America should resettle these refugees soon.
Even in the year 2023, when Pakistan started deporting illegal Afghan tourists, America intervened in this matter and said that the Pakistani government should not take action against those people who can be resettled in America.
Pakistan had accepted America’s request at that time but had asked to speed up the process of evacuating the refugees. Now the Biden administration was aware of this entire matter, but Trump administration officials have not yet talked to Pakistan on this matter.
However, Pakistan on its part is clear that it will not keep these Afghans for life but considering Donald Trump’s stance on illegal tourism, it seems that this could create problems in the future relations between the two countries.
