Vaishno Devi of Thar: Shaktipeeth of Tanot Mata

This temple of Tanot Mata, located in the Thar Desert, about 120 km from Jaisalmer, is famous as ‘Vaishno Devi of Thar’ and ‘Goddess of soldiers’. Every year thousands of devotees come here to visit. This temple is not only a center of faith for common citizens, but it has become a symbol of power and security for the Indian Army and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.

Silent witness of India-Pakistan war

The divinity of Tanot Mata Temple was introduced during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 and 1971. It is believed that the temple was targeted by the Pakistani army during the war, but the temple or soldiers posted there were not harmed by the grace of the Goddess. People still consider this incident as a miracle of mother.

In the 1965 war, the Pakistani army attacked Tanot region for three directions. About 3000 bombs were dropped in the temple area, out of which 450 fell directly into the temple premises. Surprisingly, not a single bomb exploded. During the war, a company of grenaders led by Major Jaisingh and two companies of the Border Security Force bravely faced the entire brigade of the enemy. It is said that by the grace of the mother, the Pakistani army got frustrated and started firing on its own soldiers in the dark of night, causing heavy losses.

The maintenance of the temple in the hand of the army

After the war, BSF took over the responsibility of maintenance of this holy place. Even today, BSF has the responsibility of cleaning, worship and security of the temple. Special facilities have also been provided for the devotees visiting the temple. Soldiers play an important role in maintaining the service and system of devotees in the temple. BSF provides facilities like Dharamshalas, Health Camps and Free Food for devotees throughout the year.
