Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Nearly 260 houses were demolished in Nizamuddin Colony near the Mahakal temple area in Ujjain on Saturday. The demolition comes as part of the district administration’s plan to develop the 2.25 hectares of land around the famous Mahakaleshwar Temple.

Parking and other facilities will be developed here for the convenience of the general public as the revered Jyotirlinga has been attracting devotees in large numbers from across the world.

The action has received a mixed response from the public, as some are in favour of the developmental works, while others raised concerns about the hassle and complication of the relocation process.

An ultimatum was given on Friday

The residents were given an ultimatum to vacate the house on Friday. The next morning, on Saturday, the houses were vacated and the goods were removed in the police presence. Heavy security was deployed on the spot to avoid any untoward incident.

Compensation of Rs 32 crore distributed

Of the total Rs 66 crore compensation promised to the residents for vacating their houses, Rs 32 crore has been paid so far. Takiya Masjid is also located in this area. The Ujjain district administration and police are in talks with the masjid authorities to ensure the religious facility is relocated harmoniously.

Parking, better roads & more

Expansion of Mahakal Lok area is the main objective behind the ongoing demolition of houses. The development works around the temple area aim to provide better facilities to the devotees and make the area well organised. Parking arrangements, beautification, and traffic management will be given priority to ensure public convenience.
