Imtiaz Ahmed Magre Death Controversy: The body of 23-year-old Imtiaz Ahmed Magre was found in Adabal Nala in Ahbal area of Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday morning. Now there is anger in Jammu and Kashmir over the death of this young man. The young man’s family has alleged that the youth died in custody of security forces. The family claims that Imtiaz was taken into custody by the army a few days ago. Local people and political leaders are angry with the incident and are demanding a judicial inquiry into the case. On the other hand, the police claim that Magre committed suicide by jumping into the drain and a video footage has also been released in this case. Magre is accused of providing food and shelter to terrorists.
‘Confession’ to help terrorists’
In this case, the police said, “Imtiaz was allegedly detained on suspicion of being an overground worker (OGW) of the terrorists.” Police claim that he jumped into the Vaishno River, leading the security forces towards the terrorist hideout and committed suicide. In the drone footage revealed a few hours after the body of Imtiaz, a young man is seen jumping and drowning in the canal. The police claimed that he had “accepted” to help the terrorists and tried to escape when he was taking the security forces to a hideout in the forest area.
Demand for judicial inquiry into a young man’s death
Meanwhile, Sakina Ittu, a minister in the Jammu and Kashmir government, demanded a judicial inquiry into Magre’s death, claiming that nothing was registered against the deceased in the police records. There should be a judicial inquiry into the death of Magre so that the truth can be revealed. The Pahalgam attack was very sad and unfortunate. We are all saddened by this. However, there is an atmosphere of fear. I request Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to instruct the Home Department to ensure that innocent people are not disturbed or harmed.
Detained for questioning
On the other hand, former Chief Minister Mehbooba said in a post on social media platform ‘X’, “Another body has been found in a drain in Kulgam, which is being made serious allegations about.” Local residents allege that the security forces detained Imtiaz Magre for questioning two days ago and now his body has been mysteriously found in the river.
The former Chief Minister said, “The terrorist attack in Pahalgam was a planned attempt to derail peace in Kashmir, disrupt tourism and spoil communal harmony across the country.”
Violation of democratic and legal principles
National Conference (NC) Lok Sabha member Aga Ruhullah Mehdi said, “I am very worried about the incident of the Magre’s body.” According to reliable reports, Magre was caught by security forces a few days ago and today he was handed over to his family in a dead state. After the Pahalgam attack, the death of Kashmiris cannot be seen as a compensation for loss. Arbitrary detention, murder and torture in custody violates every democratic and legal principle.
