Mumbai: In a representation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan, opposition parties on Thursday alleged that the Maharashtra legislative council chairman and legislative assembly speaker were adopting a ‘biased stance’ in the proceedings by not giving due opportunities to other parties to speak.
A delegation comprising the leader of opposition in the state council Ambadas Danve, Shiv Sena-UBT leader Bhaskar Jadhav, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, NCP SP leader Jitendra Awhad, former ministers Jayant Patil and Aditya Thackeray argued that the proceedings are conducted “bypassing” the stipulated rules and without following the legislative traditions.
The delegation urged the governor to intervene personally and ensure that justice is served to the opposition by taking necessary action on the matter.
The opposition leaders asserted that in a parliamentary system, the opposition is an essential component, not to oppose the government but to keep the government’s decisions and policies in check. The opposition’s role is to criticise where necessary and suggest alternative policies, they added. They highlighted that parliamentary traditions are not being followed, and proceedings are being conducted in violation of rules.
Danve also drew the Governor’s attention to the absence of concerned ministers during discussions on supplementary demands, even though it is mandatory for them to be present.
