Navi Mumbai: NRI police has booked an unidentified woman for knocking down a six year old boy near Jewel of Navi Mumbai and then taking him for a ride in the pretext of taking him to hospital and then abandoning him at the same accident spot with a fractured and bleeding leg.

The incident happened on Dcember 30 at around 7.30 pm when Mohammad Sameem Ansari, a six year old boy was crossing the road near L and T chowk on the road near Jewel of Navi Mumbai.

A red coloured Kia Seltos car dashed him and ran over his left foot. “I was behind the car and saw the accident happening. Immediately, I stopped and others also gathered there. The child was in terrible pain and was bleeding as well. We told the lady herself to drive the child to the hospital.

At the same time, an aunt of the boy reached there and she accompanied him the car of the accused lady. Another man who was present there on his scooter suggested to take the boy to Seawood hospital which was the nearest and asked the lady to follow him,” said the complainant and an eye witness to the accident, who doesn’t want to be named, said.

The lady followed the scooty while the complainant followed the Kia car. The scooty stopped near the Seawoods Hospital anticipating the Kia car too would stop. The lady instead, went ahead without stopping.

The complainant thought that the lady intended to stop at some other hospital and followed her. “All the while we never anticipated that she intended to flee away. She took another road and again ended up reaching the accident spot and made the boy and his aunt get down and she fled away from the spot driving very rashly. I tried following her to some distance but then lost the track.

She was accompanied by two teenagers in the car. Since she was a lady, we considered that she would be more empathetic towards the whole situation. Hence it never occurred to us to take down the details of the lady and her car,” the complainant said.

When the boy and his aunt was dropped, his father, Sameem Ansari, a balloon seller, he reached the spot. The boy was taken to Meenatai Thakeray hospital first in Nerul wherein they gave him medicines and did first aid and asked them to go to VAshi General hospital.

There, he was said that he would need surgery and hence was referred to Sion Hospital. From there, finally, he was taken to JJ hospital wherein he is undergoing treatment. “Operation is done on him and he seems to be fine. We have not been allowed to meet him yet,” the father said.

The father said that after the accident for the whole night, they were visiting hospitals after hospitals to get admitted but everyone denied citing some or the other reasons. “We were all scared. We are illiterate and have no idea how things work here. Moreover, we came to Navi Mumbai for a living only on December 24 and within six days this has happened,” he added.

Ansari used to earn Rs 300 per day at his hometown in Uttar Pradesh. His relatives in Navi Mumbai told him that he could earn upto Rs 900 in Navi Mumbai with the same amount of hard work and he took his family of a son, a year old daughter and wife to Navi Mumbai and started staying in a hutment opposite Jewel of Navi Mumbai. He sold balloons for a living here.

“We are scrutinising the CCTV footages to identify the car and the lady driver and we would trace her soon,” senior police inspector Tukaram Pawale from NRI Coastal police station said. The lady has been booked under the sections of rash driving, recklessness and act of endangering life of others under BNS and Motor Vehicle Act.
