Umrigar was the first Indian batsman to score a double century in Test cricket. On 20 November 1955, he played an inning of 223 runs against New Zealand in Hyderabad, which was the biggest innings of his Test career as well as the only double century. In this innings of 223 runs, Umrigar had hit 26 fours.
Pali Umrigar was a complete cricketer of his time who not only batted brilliantly but also had expertise in off-spin and was also known as a great fielder. He is one of the few Indian cricketers who took five wickets in an innings apart from scoring a century. Umrigar played 59 tests for India in which he scored 3631 runs. He has 12 centuries and 14 half-centuries to his name in Test cricket.
