New Delhi, 29 November (HS). The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the UP government while hearing a petition challenging the constitutional validity of the UP Gangster Act. A bench headed by Justice BR Gavai issued the notice.

The petition has been filed by lawyer Manish Kumar Gupta. In the petition, the petitioner claims that the Gangster Act is being misused by the UP Police. The UP government is arbitrarily implementing the provisions of this law against whoever it wants. The petition also challenges the right of the police to acquire property under this law, saying that the UP Gangster Act has completely failed the test of right to equality. The petition states that the UP Gangster Act is a violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens.
