A video from IIT Bombay is making waves, especially as the Mood Indigo fest is happening and hundreds of non-resident students are staying on campus. The video, shared on social media, shows a fire in one of the hostels and raises serious concerns about the state of campus accommodation.
The caption of the video reads: “The incident that happened, I think the administration should rethink about renting rooms to outsiders and making their own students vacate. This is not the first time; every year this happens but goes unnoticed. Last year, when I shifted back to my room, it was in terrible condition—walls scratched, table broken, almirah door damaged, and everything was a mess.”
According to students we spoke to, the fire was caused by non-resident guests, and it happened in the H17 Hostel. The video shows furniture, including beds, on fire, while a few students scramble to save belongings, using fire extinguishers to put out the flames.
A student from a college in Chennai, who came to IIT Bombay and rented a room on campus, shared their experience with FPJ. They sent us a photo that shows the shocking condition of the room.

“Apart from the terrible condition, there were rats in the room. We couldn’t sleep the entire night. And they charged us ₹3000 for a single bed per night. Coming to one of the most prestigious colleges in India, this is absolutely absurd,” the student said.
