Maharashtra Legislative Council’s Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe | Vijay Gohil/FPJ

Mumbai: The opposition has formally submitted a no-confidence motion against Maharashtra Legislative Council’s Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab announced on Wednesday.

About The Motion

The motion, backed by 11 members of the legislative council (MLCs), was submitted to Legislative Secretary Jitendra Bhole, with a copy sent to Council Chairperson Ram Shinde. The notice was issued on the letterhead of Opposition Leader Ambadas Danve and cites Article 183(G) of the Indian Constitution and Rule 11 of the Maharashtra Legislative Council as its basis.

Gorhe had alleged at a Marathi literary event at Delhi last month that key positions in the undivided Shiv Sena then led by Uddhav Thackeray were secured through corruption, including the gifting of two Mercedes cars. Parab stated that the motion underscores Gorhe’s loss of confidence within the House.

Sena (UBT) MLC Sunil Shinde confirmed that all 11 opposition members had signed the notice. Thackeray, speaking on the matter, remarked, “We are actually late in bringing this no-confidence motion against Gorhe. Ideally, it should have been done earlier, and she should have been suspended by now.

While the full reasons will be clear in due course, one of them is defection. We expect the motion to be discussed in the current session.”

Thackeray also dismissed Gorhe’s past remarks, stating, “Women party workers have already given her strong responses, and I don’t feel the need to comment further on her claims.”

Gorhe, a four-term MLC, was once a trusted aide of Thackeray. However, following the 2022 Shiv Sena split, she initially supported him before switching allegiance to the Eknath Shinde-led faction. Since then, her relations with Sena (UBT) leaders have remained tense.
