To ensure an eco-friendly Maghi Ganesh Utsav, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has created 26 artificial immersion ponds across the city. These designated ponds have been set up in Digha, Airoli, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane, Turbhe, Vashi, Nerul, and Belapur to facilitate the safe immersion of Plaster of Paris (PoP) Ganesh idols and prevent pollution of natural water bodies.
“This initiative follows the High Court’s order dated January 30, 2025, which prohibits the sale of PoP idols and bans their immersion in lakes, rivers, and other natural water sources,” said an official.
Officials informed that the artificial ponds are well-monitored. “Assistant Commissioners and Department Officers will oversee the immersion process, while Deputy Commissioners of both zones will supervise operations,” adds the official
Citizens are urged to immerse both PoP and clay (Shadu) idols only in the designated artificial ponds. The municipal corporation has called upon devotees to support this eco-friendly measure and contribute to preserving Navi Mumbai’s water bodies while celebrating the festival responsibly.
