Navi Mumbai: In a major crackdown on abandoned vehicles obstructing cleanliness, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has seized 107 vehicles and collected Rs 88,000 in fines. The action was taken between March 10 and 16, under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde.
The special drive, conducted by the Encroachment Department, led to the removal of 66 two-wheelers, 34 four-wheelers, and 7 auto-rickshaws and tempos from roads and footpaths across the city. These unattended vehicles were hindering road and sidewalk cleaning efforts, prompting swift municipal intervention. Despite prior notices, vehicle owners failed to take action, leading to the towing of vehicles to Sector 14, Koparkhairane.
Among the affected areas, Turbhe saw the highest number of seizures, with 17 vehicles removed and Rs 63,000 collected in fines. In Belapur, 13 vehicles were seized, leading to a fine collection of Rs 4,500. In Nerul, authorities confiscated seven vehicles and imposed a fine of Rs 6,000. The Vashi division witnessed the removal of 18 vehicles, with a penalty of Rs 6,000.
Meanwhile, Koparkhairane recorded the highest number of seizures, with 24 vehicles towed, though only Rs 1,000 was collected in fines. Ghansoli saw 12 vehicles being removed, with Rs 4,500 collected, whereas in Airoli, 17 vehicles were towed, leading to ₹3,000 in penalties. In Digha, 13 abandoned vehicles were confiscated.
“Owners can retrieve their vehicles only after presenting valid documents and paying the required fines. This campaign against abandoned vehicles will continue with even greater intensity in the coming months,” a NMMC officer said.
