Navi Mumbai: Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched extensive preparations to ensure the city remains clean and green during the Coldplay concert at Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Nerul, on January 18, 19, and 21. This global musical event is expected to draw thousands of fans from across the country and the world, and NMMC is determined to present the city as a model of cleanliness and sustainability.
The concert has been declared as a ‘Zero Waste Event’ by NMMC in tandem with the Swachh Bharat Mission. Under the guidance of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, the corporation is focusing on waste management to minimize environmental impact.
Measures include on-site waste segregation with ample disposal bins and collaboration with Stree Mukti Sanghatana, whose 150 volunteers will manage waste collection from 2 PM to midnight during the event. Plastic bottles will be recycled, while organic waste will be transported to NMMC’s Turbhe waste management facility. To support these efforts, 10 contractors will make 182 trips over the three days.
“Preparations began with a deep-cleaning drive in the Nerul area on January 12. Streets, footpaths, and medians were thoroughly cleaned, and signage and sculptures were washed using treated wastewater, conserving potable water. Special attention will also be given to maintaining cleanliness during the concert, with a dedicated clean-up drive planned from 11 PM to 4 AM each day. Parking areas will receive similar attention to ensure a seamless visitor experience,” an officer from NMMC said.
In addition to cleanliness, health and safety are also priorities. NMMC has arranged for two ambulances and medical staff at the venue and reserved 10 beds at the NMMC hospital in Nerul for emergencies.
“The corporation views this event as an opportunity to showcase Navi Mumbai’s commitment to sustainability,” Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde said. He has appealed to attendees to support the city’s cleanliness initiatives by avoiding littering and following waste disposal guidelines.
“With its eco-conscious approach and meticulous planning, Navi Mumbai is poised to host a memorable Coldplay concert, setting an example for balancing world-class entertainment with environmental responsibility,” he further added.
