The Town Planning Department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has levied fines amounting to Rs 1.40 crore on 87 developers for failing to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to control air and noise pollution caused by construction and redevelopment activities in the city.
The fines, calculated at Rs 50 per square meter of the plot area, were imposed after onsite inspections by NMMC officials revealed non-compliance with measures mandated to mitigate dust, noise, and blasting-related pollution.
The SOPs were introduced following directives issued by the Bombay High Court on December 11, 2023. The SOPs were officially published on August 1, 2024. The guidelines include the installation of CCTV cameras at construction sites, the erection of 30-foot-high tin sheets to prevent dust spread, and the use of dust fogging machines to curb particulate matter.
“The SOPs are aimed at addressing pollution concerns stemming from ongoing construction activities, ensuring both public health and environmental protection,” an NMMC official stated.
Penalty charge notices were issued for projects in Belapur, Nerul, Sanpada, Vashi, Koparkhairane, Ghansoli, and Digha. A total of 87 sites were inspected, with 72 developers having already paid the fines. The remaining developers have been given eight days to comply or settle the penalties.
An NMMC official emphasized that the department will not limit its actions to fines. If violations persist, stricter penalties will be imposed, and “Stop Work Notices” will be issued to repeat offenders.
“Builders are urged to adhere to the guidelines to avoid further penalties and contribute to environmentally responsible urban development,” the officer added.
