Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): A Nigerian national was arrested after being found with 10 lakh INR cash suspiciously in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur by the Civil Lines police, as reported on Wednesday.
It is said that the man was caught outside Jabalpur railway station during a routine check with the cash and a passport, both of which were seized by the police.
According to police, the man was identified as Igwe Patrick, 33-year-old. He had come to India on a tourist visa and claimed he was in Jabalpur for shopping.
During interrogation, Patrick failed to provide a valid explanation for the source of the money.
Income tax dept joins investigation
Police investigations suggest that the foreign currency was converted into Indian rupees in Delhi. Since the man couldn’t give a proper reason for carrying such a large amount, the police informed the Income Tax Department.
Regarding the case, Omti CSP Sonu Kurmi said the Civil Lines police and Income Tax officials are now jointly investigating the case. Legal action has been initiated into the matter under Section 106 of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita), and the man has been issued a notice.
At present, the police are closely monitoring his movements while the investigation continues.
