After decades of debate over criminalizing fraud or infidelity, Governor Keith Hochul signed a bill to repeal the law in 1907. After this decision of the court, cheating on your partner will no longer be a crime in New York. However, fraud is still considered a crime in 16 US states. Previously, fraud in New York was a felony punishable by up to 90 days in jail.
In America, states can make or change laws as per their own, New York has now decriminalized adultery.
However, there are some states where it is considered a crime and courts grant divorce on the basis of it. The New York administration is linking this decision of decriminalizing extramarital affairs or cheating with a partner to the complete freedom of the people. Generally this law was made to prevent divorce. However, only five people have been convicted under the Act since 1907.
