The effect is said to be caused due to the activation of a new Western Disturbance in the state’s northwest region..

What do meteorologists say?
According to IMD Bhopal’s senior meteorologist VS Yadav, the Western Disturbance will bring cold winds from the north. These icy winds are expected to intensify the chill across the state. This will bring a significant drop in both day and night temperatures.
The weather department also predicts light rain, or ‘Mawatha,’ around January 10 due to the Western Disturbance. This system is likely to impact northwestern parts of India, and Madhya Pradesh might experience light drizzles.

Snowfall in northern regions bring icy winds to central state
Snowfall in Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Ladakh is contributing to chilly winds sweeping into Madhya Pradesh. On Sunday, jet streams at an altitude of 12.6 km were moving at speeds of up to 240 km/hour, sustaining the cold conditions. As the snow begins to melt, the wind speeds will increase, causing temperatures in the state to drop further.
The weather department has forecasted that cold conditions will persist throughout January, with 20-22 days of cold wave likely.
