Dhanbad: Hot Axle can sometimes cause major accidents in a moving train. The rumor of a fire spread rapidly when a light spark or smoke comes out of the train, causing the nervous passengers jump from the moving train to save their lives.

Three such incidents have happened in the last one year, in which many passengers lost their lives. To deal with this problem, Railways is now going to use new technology – hot box detector (HBD) -.

Railways has installed hot box detectors at Padma station of Parsabad and Koderma-Barkakana rail route of Dhanbad-Gaya rail route of Dhanbad Railway Division. This will monitor the wheels of the train and prevent accidents.

What is hot axle and why is it dangerous?

  • Hot axle occurs when the temperature increases much due to frequent friction in the wheel of the train.
  • This problem is caused by the failure, overloading or other technical flaws of hair bearings.
  • Hot axle increases the risk of fire in the wheels of the train, which can cause panic among the passengers.

How will the hot box detector work?

The hot box detector is placed on the outer signal of the station and it becomes active as soon as the train arrives.

How to do technology work:

  1. Laser Sensor – Will monitor the temperature of the wheels of the train.
  2. Automatic Alert System – Railway will send information to control as soon as the wheel has an abnormal rise.
  3. Monitoring System – Alert message will also be sent to the nearest station and concerned employees.
  4. Data Recording – This will store data, type and temperature difference data within a minute of passing the train.

Characteristics of Technology:

  • Able to measure the temperature of the wheel of the train running at a speed of 130 km/h.
  • Equipped with infrared and proximity sensor.
  • The capacity to send information directly to the railway control room directly from the equipment along the track.

Accidents of fire in the last one year

1. Pushpak Express (22 January)

  • Many passengers jumped from the moving train due to the rumor of the fire.
  • Many people were seriously injured and some passengers died.

2. Ranchi-Sasaram Express (14 June)

  • The incident took place near Latehar Kumandi station of Dhanbad Railway Division.
  • Passengers jumped from the train with the rumor of the fire, causing two people to die.

3. Bhagalpur-Yashwantpur Express (24 February)

  • Passengers jumped from the moving train near Kalajharia in Jamtara.
  • Two passengers died in this accident too.

What does railway officials say?

Railways believe that the hot box detector will improve the safety and operational capacity of trains.

Senior DME (Divisional Mechanical Engineer) According to Chandrashekhar Prasad:

“The technical fault of passenger trains and freight trains can be forecast from the hot box detector. This will help reduce the hurdles in operations and maintain rail traffic smoothly. In the coming time, this technique will also be imposed at other major stations. ”
