The popularity of bike taxi services in India is increasing rapidly, and keeping this in mind, Uber has implemented new safety standards for its Uber Moto platform. These new features have been brought to strengthen the safety of both the riders and the drivers.

On Wednesday, Uber announced that it was going to increase security through Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and other measures. This includes the requirement of wearing helmets and new features for female drivers.

‘Helmet Selfie’ feature – Now we will be mandatory to wear helmets

Uber has introduced the AI-based ‘Helmet Selfie’ feature, which will compel the drivers to confirm wearing helmets before starting the trip.

  • Riders will also get in-app ‘Helmet Nudges’ notifications, which will remind them of wearing helmets.

  • It aims to strengthen safety standards in bike taxi services and reduce accidents.

3,000 safety kits will be distributed throughout the country

Uber announced that it would distribute 3,000 safety kits in India.

  • These safety kits will include helmets, reflective jackets, safety stickers and other safety equipment.

  • In the first phase, these kits were provided by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Harsh Malhotra to Uber Moto Drivers of Delhi.

Uber India and South Asia’s Head of Regional Supply Growth Manish Bindrani said:
“We are repeating our commitment to safe roads with new safety features and safety kits and providing drivers flexible earning opportunities.”

Special feature for women drivers – ‘Women Rider Preference’

Uber is launching a new feature to increase the safety of women, so that women drivers will be able to choose only women riders.

The move aims to motivate more women to join Uber Moto and provide them flexible earning opportunities.

Increasing popularity and economic impact of bike taxi services

The demand for bike taxis in India is increasing rapidly, as it is inexpensive and easily running service in traffic.

  • UK-based public first report, Uber’s auto and moto services contributed ₹ 36,000 crore to the Indian economy in 2024.

  • According to KPMG report, by 2030 the bike taxi industry can generate 54 lakh flexible employment in India.
