Toll tax rules 2025: In 2025, there has been a major change in the toll tax rules, which has brought relief from common citizens to special categories, relief for all. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Central Government together have implemented new rules, which are aims to increase the transparency of toll payment and save people from non-essential fees.

Let us know in detail about the new rules of toll tax 2025 and understand who will get a discount and who will still have to pay toll tax.

What is the root cause of toll tax?

Toll tax is charged for running traffic smoothly on national and state highways across the country and maintenance of roads. Its payment is usually fixed at the basis of vehicle type, weight, and distance of travel.

Heavy vehicles, such as trucks or large commercial vehicles, cause more damage to the roads, so more toll is charged from them. At the same time, bikes and light vehicles are usually under the category of low toll tax.

Who will have to pay toll tax?

According to NHAI, the following will have to pay toll tax:

  • Private vehicles like car, SUV, van (if VIP is not discount)
  • Heavy vehicles like truck, tractor, lorry
  • Private buses that are not under the state government
  • Cabs and taxis that are in commercial use
  • Vehicles may have to pay double charge without fastag

Who is exempted from toll tax?

According to the new rules of 2025, many VIPs and essential service categories are exempted from toll tax:

1. VIP category which will not have to give toll:

  • President and Prime Minister
  • Chief Minister and Governor
  • MP and MLA
  • Chief Justice of India and Judge of High Courts
  • Winners: Paramveer Chakra, Ashoka Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakra
  • All of them get full exemption on showing identity cards.

2. Vehicles of military and defense services:

  • Vehicles related to Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, and other defense
  • These vehicles are used for the security of the country, so they have been freed from toll tax.

3. Emergency Services:

  • Ambulance
  • Fire brigade
  • Police and disaster management vehicle
  • If toll is charged from them, a complaint can be lodged.

4. Bike and some buses:

  • The two -wheeler (bike, scooter) will not have to pay toll anywhere.
  • State government buses which fall under public transport have also been exempted.
  • Local travel small vehicles, which are within a radius of a few kilometers from the toll booth, are also exempted.

Big relief for those who do daily up and down

If a vehicle passes through the same toll booth twice a day, then he does not need to fill the toll twice. According to the new rules, only one and a half times a fee will have to be paid on the journey twice within 24 hours. This will benefit a lot to professionals and office going to the daily up-to-down professionals.

Fastag will remain imperative

Although the list of discounts is large, Fastag is still mandatory. If you do not have a fastag on your vehicle, then you may have to fill the toll tax at double rate, whether you are eligible or not. Therefore, it is necessary to keep the fastag active and in the balance.

How to claim exemption?

If you fall in the above categories, then you just have to show a valid identity card. Toll workers should be aware of this, but if they refuse, you can file a complaint on the helpline or website of NHAI.
