New highways and expressways are being built across the country, and along with this, the recovery of toll tax is also increasing. Every driver tries not to waste much time at the toll booth and complete the journey easily. Keeping this need in mind, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented a new rule, which is no less than a relief for the passengers trapped in the toll line.
NHAI’s new rule: 100 meter line is toll tax free!
NHAI has clarified that if the line of vehicles at the toll booth exceeds 100 meters, those vehicles will be allowed to move forward without charging toll tax. Its purpose is:
- End long queues
- Keep the flow of traffic
- Saving people’s time and fuel
To implement this rule, a yellow line is drawn in every toll lane at a distance of 100 meters from the booth. As soon as the queue of vehicles crosses this line, NHAI instructs not to take toll tax from that line vehicle. When the queue comes within 100 meters, then the normal toll tax recovery starts again.
Toll payment should be done in just 10 seconds, otherwise free entry
NHAI has said in its official statement that the toll payment process on any toll lane should not exceed 10 seconds. If the process takes more time than this, it will be considered a violation of the user’s rights.
During peak hours, when traffic is high, this rule will also be strictly implemented at that time. For this, toll operators have been directed to control the length of the lane.
What is the rule of 60 km distance?
As per the fee Rule 2008, the central government has done the minimum distance between two toll plazas to be 60 kilometers. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has also repeatedly clarified that the government aims to have only one toll plaza every 60 kilometers on any highway.
However, there are some exceptions:
- If there is a shortage of space
- There should be more traffic
- There is a situation of jam on the roads
So two toll plazas can be built at a distance of less than 60 kilometers. But this rule is generally applicable.
What is the difference between road tax and toll tax?
Many times people are confused about road tax and toll tax, while both are completely different:
1. Road Tax:
- It is offered to the state government once or annually to the state government while purchasing a vehicle.
- Its aim is to take care and convenience of general roads of the state.
2. Toll Tax:
- It is specially taken during travel on highways and expressways.
- It collects NHAI or private road construction companies.
- Its purpose is to collect the cost of road construction, maintenance and reconstruction.
