Superstar Mohanlal’s much-awaited film L2: Empuraan finally hit the big screens on Thursday (March 27), and social media platforms are flooded with reviews from those who watched the early morning shows. So far, the action-packed Prithviraj Sukumaran directorial has received mixed reviews from both fans and critics.

A sequel to the 2019 film Lucifer, which shattered box office records, L2: Empuraan is a socio-political drama that also explores a power struggle within a political party.

Several social media users have praised the film’s technical aspects, especially the way a particular ‘jungle’ scene has been shot. However, some felt that the film failed to leave a lasting impact, with many finding the first part more engaging in comparison.

Initial reactions on X also praised Mohanlal’s, but the predictable plot and weak second half drew criticism.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), a fan raved about the film’s grand visuals. Lauding the film’s production, the user wrote, “A grand stylish action drama which takes a lottt of time to take-off… In Part 1, we won’t feel the absence of #Mohanlal on screen.. But in this part, we long for his entry… terrific production values & super stylish visuals.”

Another review read, “#Empuraan – Prithvi delivered what he promised. Each characters with stunning performances. DD bangs with his score. 💥Tho movie lacks consistency, enjoyed it to the core. Hollywood level item erakkittund. And that jungle scene is peak cinema.”

Besides Mohanlal, Prithviraj, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Indrajith Sukumaran have also reprised their roles from Lucifer in L2: Empuraan. Game of Thrones actor Jerome Flynn also made his Indian film debut with the movie.

Empuraan has already been declared a hit by trade analysts, as the film has grossed Rs 12.85 crore through advance bookings alone. According to the makers, Lucifer and Empuraan are part of a trilogy, and details of the third and final installment have been kept under wraps.

Notably, L2: Empuraan has become the first-ever Malayalam film to release in IMAX, elevating the viewing experience. The movie was also released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
