Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency hit the big screens on Friday (January 17) and it has been receiving rave reviews from film critics and the audience. Directed by Kangana herself, the film is based on the life of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Those who have watched the early morning shows of the film have flooded social media platforms with their reviews.
While some were all praise for Kangana’s performance, others called the film a ‘masterpiece’.
A film critic wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “I wasn’t expecting Emergency to hit me so hard! Kangana Ranaut nails the role of Indira Gandhi with such raw honesty, and the whole cast brings their A-game. The visuals are stunning, the story captures the intensity of the 1975 incident, and the music perfectly complements the background of the film. This film does justice to our history in every frame. It’s a must watch to know about our history.”
Another review by a netizen read, “Kangana Ranaut has captured the essence of our history with such honesty. The performances are gripping, the visuals are stunning and the music hits every emotional beat. This film is truly a must-watch for anyone who values our history. “

Emergency Controversies
Before the film hit the big screens, it faced several hurdles, especially during receiving certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). It was initially scheduled to release theatrically on September 6.
Additionally, it has been facing opposition from certain Sikh organisations, who accused the makers of misrepresentation and objected to its release.
Earlier, Kangana had also revealed that she had to sell her Mumbai property to fund the project after the postponement, an ordeal she never anticipated while bringing this film to life.
The film brings to life the political chessboard of the time, from Jayaprakash Narayan’s fiery protests (Anupam Kher) to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s oratorical brilliance (Shreyas Talpade).
Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is played by Milind Soman, Pupul Jayakar by Mahima Choudhary, and Jagjivan Ram by late actor Satish Kaushik. Vishak Nair will be seen playing the role of Sanjay Gandhi in the political drama.
