Navi Mumbai Sports Association (NMSA), the city’s oldest and largest sports club in Vashi, is set to hold elections for its managing committee for the 2025–26 to 2029–30 term. Among the candidates are former corporators Raju Shinde and Vaibhav Gaikwad, both vying for key positions of the association.
Raju Shinde, a lifetime member of NMSA, is contesting for the position of committee member. Drawing from his extensive experience in leading various committees within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Shinde aims to address several pressing issues within the association.
He emphasizes the need for a clear policy to grant membership to children of existing members, upgrading the association’s online systems, enhancing administrative accountability, and improving revenue generation.
Previously, Shinde was co-opted as a committee member, but this marks his first independent bid. He stated, “With my past experience of heading committees of NMMC, I am positive about taking up the responsibility.
The elections are to be conducted through the ballot box on February 2.
Known for his proactive stance on civic issues, Shinde has previously advocated for better maintenance of the amenities in the association. His campaign focuses on leveraging his municipal experience to benefit NMSA’s administration and address members’ concerns effectively.
The managing committee comprises 12 members, including the Vice president, General Secretary, Joint secretary (2), treasurer, and seven committee members, with two seats reserved for women.
An election officer has been appointed to oversee the process, and the club’s 6,000 members are preparing to elect their new representatives. Notably, some positions have been filled uncontested, highlighting the significance of the contested roles. A total of 5690 voters are expected to cast their vote.
NMSA, located in Vashi, has been a cornerstone of Navi Mumbai’s sports community since its establishment. The association offers a range of facilities, including cricket and football grounds, a swimming pool, and courts for various sports.
As the election approaches, members are keen to see how the new leadership will address these challenges and steer the association towards a more inclusive and member-centric future.
