Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken strict action against 33 major property tax defaulters, leading to the recovery of Rs 5.12 crores from 10 of them. The crackdown comes after repeated notices and warnings were ignored, prompting legal action under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde.
As part of its intensified tax collection drive, NMMC has identified 8,000 defaulters who owe more than Rs 1 lakh each. Despite issuing notices, many have failed to respond, prompting the civic body to initiate property seizures.
On Friday, NMMC will seal 68 commercial shops in Ameya Co-operative Housing Society, Nerul, which have a collective outstanding property tax of Rs 5.32 crores. “An officer has been appointed to execute the action. If defaulters fail to clear their dues within five days, the shops will be auctioned to recover the pending amount,” said an officer from NMMC.
NMMC has set a property tax collection target of Rs 900 crores for the financial year 2024-25, with Rs 617 crores already collected. To ensure full recovery, the civic body plans to take further measures, including disconnecting water supply to defaulting societies and auctioning seized properties of non-compliant defaulters.
Emphasizing that property tax is a crucial revenue source for maintaining civic amenities, NMMC has urged all property owners to pay their dues on time. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has warned defaulters to settle their outstanding amounts promptly to avoid strict legal action.
