Gujarat has set a new record in the field of rural development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘strong village, prosperous nation’ and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
346 panchayats of Gujarat included in the leading category
In the PAI report released on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day, celebrated on 24 April every year, 346 gram panchayats of Gujarat got a place in the ‘lead’ category, which is the highest in the country. In addition, 13,781 gram panchayats of Gujarat also topped the ‘Performer category’. This achievement is a proof of the effective administrative system of the panchayats of Gujarat and its commitment to sustainable rural development.
Major reasons for Gujarat’s success
Dr. Gaurav Dahiya (IAS), Additional Development Commissioner and State Nodal Officer of Gujarat Panchayat Department, has highlighted the strategy behind this success of the state. According to him, the Government of Gujarat has promoted several review meetings, capacity enrichment sessions and efforts for departmental coordination to implement the ground development and Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGS) at the local level. The state has made data-based schemes and evidence-based good governance its priority, the result of which has emerged as a better performance of Gujarat in PAI.

The Panchayat Unnati Index is a holistic and comprehensive assessment tool measuring the progress of more than 2.5 lakh gram panchayats across the country to suit the Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGS). This index assesses the development of villages based on 9 major topics, including:
