A memorial will be built in honor of Dr. Manmohan Singh at the National Smriti Sthal Complex located near Rajghat in Delhi. This monument will be built on a plot of 900 square meters. Recently, the family members of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the site. His wife, Gursharan Kaur formally sent a letter of acceptance to the government. His daughters Upinder Singh and Damayanti Singh along with their husbands went to inspect the proposed site.

Limited plots available in National Smriti Sthal

According to sources, only two empty plots are left in the National Smriti Sthal. In January, one plot was allotted to the family of former President Pranab Mukherjee, while the other has been proposed to Dr. Manmohan Singh’s family. The family plans to receive this plot through a trust. The government can provide a maximum assistance of Rs 25 lakh for the construction of this monument.

The monuments of several prominent leaders are located at the National Smriti Sthal. In front of the proposed plot for Dr. Singh, there is a tomb of former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar, while behind former President R.K. Venkataraman is the tomb. The tomb of former President Giani Zail Singh and Pranab Mukherjee are located on both sides.

Dr. Singh’s funeral and memorial construction

In 2013, when Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister, the Central Government decided to develop the National Smriti Sthal as a shared tomb. However, after his death, he was cremated on 28 December 2024 at Nigabodh Ghat. The Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that the funeral was performed at Nigabodh Ghat due to the time in the land allocation process for the memorial.

The National Smriti Sthal, situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, currently has memorials of seven prominent leaders, including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, PV Narasimha Rao and Chandrashekhar. Now the name of Dr. Manmohan Singh is also going to be added to this list. The construction of the memorial will be done by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), while it will be borne by the trust constituted by Singh’s family.

Dr. Manmohan Singh is considered the father of India’s economic reforms. After his death, his simplicity and dedication were remembered across the country. With the formation of this monument, another step will be taken to honor his legacy. According to officials, the design of the monument will be similar to other monuments of the National Smriti Complex, with a platform of black granite and the sandstone of sandstone around it. However, the discussion between the family and the government on its last outline is still going on.
