The Nashik Municipal Corporation has successfully collected approximately Rs 27 crore under a property tax amnesty scheme launched in October and November 2024. Around 30,000 property tax defaulters participated, benefiting from a fine waiver of approximately Rs 13 crore under the scheme.
With property tax arrears currently totalling around Rs 450 crore (including Rs 200 crore in penalties), the scheme has offered defaulters significant relief. Municipal officials reported strong participation in the first two months and expect to collect an additional Rs 30 crore in the upcoming months. The scheme aims to encourage defaulters to clear arrears while reducing the penalty burden.
A similar scheme in 2021, implemented for two months, collected Rs 14.86 crore from 17,560 defaulters, with a total fine waiver of Rs 56.33 lakh. The municipality has set a property tax collection target of Rs 250 crore for the financial year. So far, over Rs 150 crore has been collected.
The scheme has helped the NMC to handle property tax arrears while incentivising compliance. With significant participation expected in December and January, the initiative is likely to bolster the city’s revenue collection, aiding in infrastructure development and reducing financial strain on residents.
The municipality plans to engage further with stakeholders to maximise participation and ensure the scheme achieves its full potential, contributing to Nashik’s economic health and development.
Discount under the scheme:
– A 95% discount on fines was offered for arrears paid between October 1 and November 30.
– An 85% discount is available for payments made in December.
– A 75% discount will be offered in January.
