Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murthy criticized the trend of freebes (distributing things for free) and said that poverty will not be removed. He insisted that creating new employment opportunities is the right way to eradicate poverty. The Supreme Court had earlier questioned the freebi culture and said that people start to avoid working hard.

“Poverty will be reduced from innovation and entrepreneurship, not freques”

Speaking at the Tycon Mumbai-2025 program, Narayan Murthy said that freeds do not reduce poverty, but it can end with innovations and employment creation made by entrepreneurs. He appealed to all entrepreneurs to focus on setting up new companies and businesses.

“If we can make innovative enterprises successfully, poverty will disappear like dew in the sun.” – Narayana Murthy

“Employment creation is the right way to eradicate poverty”

Addressing entrepreneurs, Murthy said:

“I have no doubt that each of you will create hundreds of thousands of jobs. Similarly, we can solve the problem of poverty. It cannot be removed by giving free things. There is no country in the world that has eliminated poverty by this method. ”

Distance from politics, but policy recommendations

Murthy’s statement has come at a time when political debate on freebes and their cost is intensifying. However, he clarified that he is not commenting on politics or governance, rather it is his policy recommendations.

“Assessment of results in lieu of assistance is necessary”

He suggested that whenever a government provides freebies, it is necessary to check whether there has been any positive change in the life of the beneficiaries.

For example, he said that if 200 units of free electricity is being provided per month in a state, then the government should conduct a survey after six months whether it improved children’s education or not.

Murthy’s statement on AI: “Stupid old programs are being sold in the name of AI”

Murthy also expressed his opinion on the subject related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). He said that nowadays most AI solutions are just rebranded versions of old programs, which are being promoted as future technology.

He also clarified that AI can only be effective only when capabilities like machine learning and deep learning are used correctly.
