After a crushing defeat in the Maharashtra assembly elections, the Congress has made a major reshuffle in the party organization. Nana Patole has been removed from the post of president, and former MLA Harshvardhan Sapkal has been appointed as the new president of the state unit. According to a release issued by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Harshvardhan Sapkal. 57 -year -old Sapkal has been a Congress MLA from Buldhana from 2014 to 2019 and is considered close to Rahul Gandhi.

Harshvardhan Sapkal was accused of creating a ruckus during the budget session in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on 22 March 2017, the then Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar of stopping the budget speech and tearing a copy of the budget. Due to this, he was suspended from Maharashtra Legislative Assembly till 31 December. At the time of the incident, 19 MLAs were suspended, including 9 Congress and 10 NCP MLAs.
